Living into the promises of God
Faith is more than belief—it’s the foundation of a life shaped by Jesus. In this message from the Basic Training series, the focus is on how faith begins, how it grows, and why it must remain centered on Christ rather than on rules or rituals.
Faith Has a Starting Point
Everyone has a starting point in faith. Some grow up in church and experience a gradual journey. Others encounter a dramatic turning point that changes everything. Regardless of the path, faith always begins with a step of trust.
Abraham’s story in Genesis 12:1–4 illustrates this well. God called him to leave everything familiar and trust His promise. Abraham didn’t know the outcome, but he believed God and acted. Faith starts the same way for us: with a step of trust.
Faith Faces Questions and Doubts
As we grow older, childhood faith often collides with adult realities. Questions arise:
- If God is good, why does evil continue?
- Why do prayers sometimes feel unanswered?
- Why do bad things happen to good people?
Instead of ignoring these doubts, we can allow them to deepen our trust. As Philip Yancey writes, “Faith is trusting in advance what will only make sense in reverse.”
From Experience to Trust
The book of Acts reminds us that the early church didn’t rely on a completed Bible—they relied on Jesus. When Peter preached at Pentecost in Acts 2:17–21, he pointed to God’s promises fulfilled through Christ. Later, Paul and Barnabas showed people not a book but a living Savior, performing miracles and calling them to turn to the living God (Acts 14:8–15).
In the same way, faith today isn’t sustained by knowing about Jesus but by experiencing Him and trusting Him with our lives.
Practical Takeaways
- Take the first step. Faith doesn’t grow without movement. Start where you are.
- Name your comfort zones. Identify where God may be calling you to trust Him beyond what feels safe.
- Shift your focus. Don’t worship the messenger or even the book itself—anchor your faith in Jesus.
- Embrace questions. Doubt can become the doorway to a deeper faith.
Bottom Line
Faith begins with a step of trust. It’s not about perfect understanding, but about placing confidence in Jesus—the one who is alive, active, and trustworthy.
