Gratefully Yours

Gratitude is more than a feeling—it’s a perspective that reshapes how we see life. In this message, Pastor Gene Troyer opens the “Gratitude” series with a call to live free from fear, scarcity, and control. When we live from a grateful heart, our faith deepens, our relationships grow stronger, and our vision expands.

The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude changes everything. It shifts our focus from what’s missing to what matters most. Even in loss, disappointment, or pain, gratitude gives us stability. It doesn’t ignore hardship; it reframes it.

In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul teaches that generosity and gratitude flow from the same source—the grace of God. When we practice thankfulness, our hearts stay open to what God is doing, even when life feels uncertain.

Living with an Abundance Mindset

We often equate freedom with control, but the Bible defines freedom as trust. To live free, we must loosen our grip on material things and learn to rely on God’s provision. True peace can coexist with chaos when our hearts are anchored in Christ.

At Restōr, the vision is simple: with restoration and peace. These aren’t just ideals—they’re hallmarks of a Spirit-infused community. When we’re “marinating in the Spirit of Christ,” as Gene says, we take on His character. Restoration and peace become not just what we believe, but who we are.

The Truth About Tithing

Gene admits that tithing is rarely discussed at Restōr—but it’s a vital spiritual practice. The biblical tithe means giving ten percent of one’s income to the local church. Yet this isn’t a transaction; it’s worship.

In Malachi 3:10, God invites His people to test Him in this:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

This promise isn’t about getting rich. It’s about spiritual fruit. Generosity produces joy, kindness, and contentment—qualities no money can buy. When we trust God with our resources, He reshapes our desires and priorities.

Living Generously

Tithing puts God first. It’s a practical way to demonstrate trust before paying bills or making plans. As Gene shared from personal experience, giving first didn’t make life easier—but it changed everything about how he and Brenda saw their needs.

Paul’s teaching reinforces this in 2 Corinthians 9:6–11:

“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously… God loves a cheerful giver.”

Generosity isn’t a transaction—it’s transformation. It breaks materialism’s grip and aligns our hearts with God’s mission.

Breaking Free from the Prosperity Gospel

Gene also rejects the “prosperity gospel” mindset that turns God into a bank. “Being generous isn’t something you do,” he said. “It’s something you are.” When we give from gratitude—not greed—we live more fully in God’s purpose.

We give not to get, but because God already gave everything through Jesus Christ. That truth alone fuels a lifetime of generosity.

Building a Lasting Legacy

Troyer challenges the church to think generationally: If Restōr Church disappeared tomorrow, would our community notice? Faithful giving builds more than budgets—it builds legacy.

When we invest in God’s kingdom, we’re funding restoration, peace, and transformation for generations to come. As Psalm 112:1–9 declares:

“Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely… They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”

Practical Takeaways

  • Start with gratitude. Let thanksgiving reshape your view of hardship.
  • Live with abundance. Scarcity thinking steals joy; trust restores peace.
  • Give as worship. Tithing isn’t about money—it’s about surrender.
  • Model generosity. Teach your children to give and to live open-handed.
  • Invest in legacy. What you give today builds the foundation for tomorrow.

Bottom Line

Gratitude and generosity are inseparable. When we give freely, we discover freedom. When we trust God with what we have, He transforms who we are.
