The second message in the Built Different series dives into 1 Peter 1:13-25, challenging believers to “Think Different, Live Different.” In a culture that constantly encourages chasing comfort and unstable identities, followers of Jesus are called to a countercultural life anchored in an unshakable hope, a transformed mind, and enduring faith.

You Are What You Love: The Gymnasium of Worship

When life gets hard, it is easy to drift into spiritual instability—breeding confusion, inconsistency, and shallowness. Often, people feel “stuck” in life, but the reality is that their thinking is what is stuck.

Humans are not merely intellectual creatures making purely rational choices; we are visceral beings driven by what we long for, crave, and love. Over 90% of daily actions come from automated habits rather than active, rational decisions. What an individual repeatedly does points directly to what they actually worship.

Therefore, corporate worship is not just a time to show devotion to God. It works from the top down. Worship is the arena—the spiritual gymnasium—where God recalibrates hearts, reforms desires, and rehabilitates loves. It is a formative, countercultural practice that reorders a person’s deepest affections toward the Kingdom of God.

Seven Commands for a Countercultural Life

In 1 Peter 1:13-25, scripture lays out a clear, actionable blueprint for living at peak spiritual performance. By applying these seven directives, believers can stop slipping back into old, self-absorbed desires:

  • Prepare Your Mind: The ancient phrase “gird up the loins of your mind” means to gather up the loose ends of your thoughts so you can move with agility. Do not live on autopilot; actively prepare your mind for the daily battle.
  • Exercise Self-Control: Restrain your wandering heart. Stop letting your attention drift, harness the energy of your thought life, and cut loose the distractions that tie you down.
  • Place Your Hope in Christ: Anchor your entire confidence in the unearned grace and mercy that Jesus freely offers, rather than relying on shifting circumstances.
  • Practice Obedience: Resist slipping back into the old patterns and selfish cravings that once alienated you from God. Refuse to let a broken society force you into its mold.
  • Be Holy: True holiness is not about outward religious behavior, like wearing the right clothes or having the right haircut. It is an inner transformation that flows outward into a life of purity, humility, and righteousness.
  • Fear God: Live in reverent awe of God’s authority. God evaluates people based on their actual choices, meaning no one can rely on inherited religious titles or their parents’ faith background to save them.
  • Love Each Other Deeply: Unconditional love is an action and a commitment, not just a feeling. It covers a multitude of offenses and requires loving others through the hardest of circumstances.

Mind Change vs. Heart Change

The tragedy of the human experience is that many people hear the truth, encounter the message, and yet walk away completely unchanged because they refuse to bow to its authority.

“The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” —1 Peter 1:24-25

While changing the way you think is the necessary first step, a change of mind without a change of heart is ultimately unsustainable. True, lasting life change requires letting Jesus give you an entirely new heart—one that is soft, pliable, and filled with forgiveness, love, peace, and joy.

Reflection Questions

  • Are your daily habits and automated routines revealing that you worship God, or that you are driven by the culture’s definition of comfort?
  • Which of the seven commands from 1 Peter 1 do you struggle with the most, and how can you actively practice it this week?
  • Have you been trying to manage your behavior through a “change of mind,” or have you fully surrendered to Jesus for a complete “change of heart”?
